Abstract:
French design can be understood through a long cultural history in which artistic creation, craftsmanship, industry, and intellectual thought have remained closely connected. Rather than being simply a response to industrial production, design in France developed from traditions of decorative arts, architecture, luxury craftsmanship, and the organization of taste as it is still demonstrated with creative designers like Philippe Starck. In the twentieth century, figures such as Charlotte Perriand, and Jean Prouvé contributed to new relationships between design, architecture, materials, and industrial production. France repeatedly sought to reconcile artistic quality with engineering, technological innovation and economic transformation. Laurent’s approach highlights the importance of institutions, designers, manufacturers, exhibitions, and educational structures in constructing this identity. French design is therefore characterized by a persistent dialogue between art and industry, tradition and innovation, and individual creativity and collective cultural values. Its historical identity is also linked to the idea that objects and environments can embody social distinction, national prestige, and changing conceptions of modernity but it is also challenged by international competition especially at the time of globalization.
About the Speaker:
Stephane Laurent is a Professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of BNBU. His fields of research deal with 19th to 21st century Architecture, Fine Arts, Design, Cross-cultural studies and Art Education. He published several books: a long essay on a cross-cultural approach of the ornament, including Chinese patterns, a biography of the French painter Bernard Buffet as an art market phenomenon after the Second World war, a survey on the History of Design, and several books about applied arts education in France, which received broad media coverage. He also published many articles dealing with the history of architecture, art and design. His most recent book with a prestigious French publisher represents the first major reference work on the history of design in France.
