Abstract
The lecture is in two parts. Part One will examine the use of English in business contexts and discuss the factors related to the effectiveness of language use. Through examples, taken from daily life workplace contexts, the suitability of choices regarding vocabulary, sentence structures and discourse structures will be analysed, by highlighting issues and features of note. Part Two will introduce the career prospect of TESL graduates to become professional teachers in Hong Kong and the pathway to attain the membership of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.

Dr Li has written a number of well-known monographs and textbooks (such as Effective Business Communication in English and Business Communication, Organization and Management) published by major publishers, including Pearson Education and the Commercial Press. He is also Honorary Chair Professor and Visiting Professor of a number of tertiary institutions in China and the United Kingdom. He has served as an advisor and external examiner in various education and professional development programmes.
